Umweltökonomie (Madlener, V2/Ü2, SS, economics competency, environmental competency)
In view of numerous still unsolved or newly emerging environmental problems and the resulting environmental policy challenges, environmental economics as a branch of economics continues to be important in the 21st century. Examples of recent environmental regulations are the introduction of Europe-wide trading in CO2 emission certificates or the Ecological Tax Reform introduced in Germany. The optimal design of such regulations and their transfer to other markets with a need for regulation are indispensable for the efficient achievement of set environmental goals and an efficient allocation of resources. Environmental economics makes an essential contribution to the understanding and thus also the acceptance of environmental policy measures and forms the basis for an explicit consideration of the cost and benefit aspects of environmental protection in economic and business management considerations. The course provides a basic understanding of different environmental problems from an economic point of view and deals with the most important environmental policy instruments under different practice-relevant framework conditions. Students will ultimately also gain some basic knowledge of the economic sub-discipline of finite resource economics as well as various methods for measuring environmental damages and benefits.
Students will be introduced to basic knowledge and motivation of environmental economics.
- By presenting and discussing theoretical concepts, the general nature and functioning of various environmental policy instruments will be illustrated.
- Practical examples will be used to discuss problems in the design of environmental policy instruments.
- In the context of cost-benefit analyses, the students will get to know measurement methods for the recording and evaluation of environmental problems from an economic point of view.
No knowledge of economics other than that required for admission to the course.
Successful participation in a written exam (100%, graded, 60min.) or if the number of participants is <12 oral exam in groups of 3-4 persons (100%, graded, 60min.)
